Chapter 7

Make Amends

“I am a terrible person,” Evelyn thought to herself again. She was obviously not done beating herself up over what she had done to Christina. She was hurting almost as bad as Christina was. She couldn’t believe she had let herself get so carried away and became this cruel person. She wasn’t a bad person; she knew it deep within her, she just had to take action when she found out Christina had been using her all along.

“I am not a terrible person, and I will make this right,” she affirmed to her reflection in the mirror.

Splashing some water on her face, she stepped out of her room. She walked down the hall to Viv’s room and knocked.

The door opened, but it wasn’t opened by Viv. A tall, beautiful lady stood by the door, with baggy shorts and kind hazel eyes.

“Oh! Hi Evelyn!” Savannah, Viv’s girlfriend, said.

“I’m sorry Sav, I had no idea you were here. I’ll check back later. It was nice seeing you again,” Evelyn said, and turned to leave.

“I was just about to go; I’ll be back later. Viv is in though,” Sav replied, and left the room.

Evelyn walked in and saw Viv, still in bed, looking like a lazy cat on vacation. Evelyn would have teased her, if she was in a better mood, but it wasn’t the time for jokes.

She sat on the single chair in the room, without Viv inviting her to sit, but because she felt too weak to stand a minute longer.

Viv, sensing Evelyn was really troubled, jumped out of bed immediately.

“What’s wrong, Evelyn? Did something happen?” she asked.

“I should have listened to you, Viv, I’m sorry I didn’t. I’ve caused you and Christina so much pain, I feel like a mess—I am such a mess—can you ever forgive me? I told you to mind your own business, when all you were trying to do was help me not to fall into the same trap you fell in. I’m so sorry, Viv,” she started, fighting back tears.

“Don’t say that. We’ve been over this before, remember? It’s fine . . .” Viv reassured.

“I’m sorry for troubling you this way, I just thought you should know that it’s over with Christina. I’m sure she wouldn’t want to have anything to do with me after all I did to her. Viv, what have I done?” It was like a dam broke, for all the tears poured forth with no intention to stop. She cried for her aching heart; she cried for Christina’s aching heart; she cried for the pain Christina caused Viv; she cried for the pain that made Christina what she was; she cried for the love she never knew she had until she lost it—the best thing she never had . . .

“Oh Evelyn . . .” Viv said, scrambling for words to say. She offered her a hug again and Evelyn willingly took it. A hug seemed like the only currency she was willing to part with; she was being careful about letting her guard down again.
